Historical overview
The combination of mountain troops and the Netherlands is maybe a strange one. However since 1973 the Netherlands Marines and British Royal Marines work together in their task to defend the North flank of Europe. Therefore it was necessary to conduct education, training and exercises, were they archived techniques and tactics for mountain and arctic warfare in a harsh environment.
To make sure that all these lessons learned and doctrine was described the Netherland founded the Joint Centre of Competence for Military Operations under eXtreme conditions (J-KCMOX). Initially is was founded as a one-man office in January 2006 and was called cold weather trainer. In 2010 J-KCMOX was located in the center of the Netherlands in Doorn and became what it is now: a centre of competence consisting of mountain, arctic, working on height, jungle and military tracking warfare of the Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MOD).
Since 2011 the J-KCMOX became a permanent member of the IAMMS, with the topic urban climbing organized in the Netherlands.
In 2013 the J-KCMOX moved to den Helder in the northern part of the Netherlands were the Navy has her harbor. The Royal Navy is a single service management for the J-KCMOX, but the J-KCMOX operates in an joint and combined environment direct for the MOD.
